چکیده

Fixed-probe-level temporal masking curves (TMCs) were obtained from normal-hearing listeners at probe frequencies between 250 and 8000 Hz. The short probe tones were fixed in level (approximately 10-dB SPL). The level of the preceding forward masker was adjusted to obtain masked threshold as a function of the time delay between masker and probe. These isoresponse TMCs were obtained for an on-frequency masker, where the masker frequency (Fm) and probe frequency (Fp) were the same, and for an off-frequency masker below the probe frequency (Fm = 0.6 Fp). Slopes of off-frequency TMCs for probe tones at 250-1000 Hz were steeper than those for probe tones between 2000 and 4000 Hz, supporting the notion that response growth for Fm = 0.6 Fp at lower probe frequencies is not linear. Therefore, a group average off-frequency TMC slope, for probe frequencies between 2 and 4 kHz, was used to calculate response growth at every probe frequency. Input/output response growth curves were derived from the TMCs, and response growth rates were calculated as a function of the masker level in individual ears. At any particular probe frequency, response growth rates varied with input level, from near 1.0 at low input levels, to <0.2 at mid levels, and back to near 1.0 at levels above 80-dB SPL. It was concluded that compression is equally strong at low and high frequencies as it is at mid frequencies.

Effects of background noise level on behavioral estimates of basilar-membrane compression.

Hearing-impaired (HI) listeners often show poorer performance on psychoacoustic tasks than do normal-hearing (NH) listeners. Although some such deficits may reflect changes in suprathreshold sound processing, others may be due to stimulus audibility and the elevated absolute thresholds associated with hearing loss. Masking noise can be used to raise the thresholds of NH to equal the thresholds ...

Evaluation of Gait Variability in Deafness and Comparing it with Normal-hearing Listeners After a Course of Interventional Proprioceptive Training

Objective: Gait variability index is an important index in the clinical treatment of people with walking problems. Since the variability of gait behavior in deaf people has not been evaluated so far, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the walking variability of deaf people and compare it with normal-hearing listeners. Methods: The statistical population of this study was deaf and hearin...

Short-term temporal integration: evidence for the influence of peripheral compression.

Thresholds for a 6.5-kHz sinusoidal signal, temporally centered in a 400-ms broadband-noise masker, were measured as a function of signal duration for normally hearing listeners and listeners with cochlear hearing loss over a range of masker levels. For the normally hearing listeners, the slope of the function relating signal threshold to signal duration (integration function) was steeper at me...

Cochlear nonlinearity between 500 and 8000 Hz in listeners with normal hearing.

Cochlear nonlinearity was estimated over a wide range of center frequencies and levels in listeners with normal hearing, using a forward-masking method. For a fixed low-level probe, the masker level required to mask the probe was measured as a function of the masker-probe interval, to produce a temporal masking curve (TMC). TMCs were measured for probe frequencies of 500, 1000, 2000, 4000, and ...

Masker phase effects in normal-hearing and hearing-impaired listeners: evidence for peripheral compression at low signal frequencies.

The presence of cochlear-based compression at low frequencies was investigated by measuring phase effects in harmonic maskers. In normal-hearing listeners, the amount of masking produced depends strongly on the phase relationships between the individual masker components. This effect is thought to be determined primarily by properties of the cochlea, including the phase dispersion and compressi...
